Tool Chest for Diabetiks
1. USDA NUTRIENT DATA BASE
A. “The US Department of Agriculture maintains a database containing the entire nutrient profile of nearly every type of food you can imagine. Click on the link to reach it. When the page opens, go to the “Search” box at the bottom of your screen, enter the name of the food you are interested in (example-Potato) and press your Enter key. Click here to reach the site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl “
B. Now you will need a conversion chart for grams to ounces and vice versa on our site. Check this link on the National Institute of Standards site. It links to 5 or 6 converters that can be downloaded. http://ts.nist.gov/ts/htdocs/200/202/mpo_reso.htm

The formula is BMI = http://www.caloriecontrol.org/bmi.html links to a non-profit that will be helpful http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/bmicalculator.html Body mass index for kids.
4. DR. PODELL’S VIEWS ON WHAT IS HELPFUL AND WHAT IS NOT:
5. READ THE LABELS! “SURGARLESS” DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN LOW GLYCEMIC/LOW CARB:
Example illustrating the fact that Entemen’s (or “a national brand’s”) sugarless cakes are so high in carbs that they are totally inappropriate for diabetics and all other low carb dieters. The same goes for sugarless gum: Sugarless and “regular” both have two grams of carbs per stick.
Also “fat free” and “light” usually mean “very high carb”, because the substances that are used to replace the fat are carbohydrates.
6. ORIGINAL RECIPES AND HINTS:
Try some of our recipes For example, make a quick, no carb snack by placing a slice of Swiss cheese on a piece of sliced ham and rolling it up. If you want it warm, nuke it for 10 seconds. If you want it to be fancy, roll the ham and Swiss cheese around a stalk of asparagus or a piece of lettuce.
Here’s another one: In recipes that call for beans, use sliced mushrooms instead.
7. RECIPES FROM CUSTOMERS
Send us your favorite recipes and we will post them after testing them in our kitchen.
8. Purchase THE LOW CARB COOKBOOK CD we found on the INTERNET:
